'L’ART DE BÂTIR' AT HINES EUROPE

Commissioned for the boardroom of Hines' European headquarters in Covent Garden, London, Traces of Absence / L’Art de Bâtir celebrates the grand history of architecture, aligning with Hines' global vision as a leading real estate developer.

Created over the span of eight months in 2023-2024, this triptych connects historical craftsmanship with modern architectural principles. Inspired by Jean-Baptiste Rondelet’s Traité Théorique et Pratique de L'Art de Batir (Theoretical and Practical Treatise on the Art of Building), the work features architectural illustrations from the 11th edition of this 19th-century text.

Spanning three large panels (99 x 151 cm each), the intricate drawings — including the construction of staircases, arches, and building plans — are thoughtfully placed throughout the composition, interspersed with industrial nickel silver sheets, symbolizing the balance between artistry and construction.

The delicate placement of the illustrations within the metallic framework evokes the ongoing dialogue between architectural vision and material. The repetition and symmetry of the triptych mirror the monumental nature of building design, while the metallic surfaces reflect the steel frameworks essential to modern architecture.

This triptych captures both the technical mastery and aesthetic grandeur of architecture, created for a company shaping today’s urban landscapes.
