Refraction II

20th-century railway ticket collection on a 22ct half-gilded base
61 x 38 x 6 cm
2025

Refraction explores how experience is altered when culture is remembered rather than lived. Set against fully gilded grounds, memory becomes a medium that bends perception, causing familiar experiences to be recalled differently through idealisation, distance and time.

Refraction plays with the idea of memory, exploring how the recall of cultural experience can differ when remembered rather than lived. Memory is embodied by the tickets, traces of journeys travelled and lives lived, becoming a medium that alters our perception. Set upon a completely gilded and reflective background, their appearance becomes ethereal, almost magical, as experience is remembered differently through the distance of time and idealisation. There is beauty but it has a nature of other worldliness, as memories often dance in our psyche, recalling something deep within that often no longer exists.
