Parthenocissus tricuspidata – or Boston Ivy – fleetingly turns scarlet tinged with black and gold just once a year. It is these colours that ignite Francisca Prieto’s memory of walking past Whitehall at a moment fraught with political uncertainty through Brexit. The magical brilliance of nature’s colours, of leaves once green that seem aflame, epitomise this moment, as they set the walls of government alight. Deep and dramatic reds lick the work’s matt black metal frame, mottling to coppery gold in burning patterns, of which no two are the same. The effect is mesmerising, fitting for the strength of a moment that never leaves us.
