Dichotomy VIII
Dichotomy I-XI visualises the contrasting cultural influences that have shaped Francisca’s life. Two divergent colour schemes symbolise the distinct experiences of living in South America and Europe for the same amount of time; Francisca was born and grew up in Chile and has lived in the UK since studying in London. The unexpected combinations of colours represent the collision of two cultural identities that coexist, clashing yet coming together to work as one.
Each distinct half of the work speaks to a separate chapter of Francisca’s journey or personal experience. Sometimes bold, sometimes soft, the colours are enlivened by the rippling of the collected railway tickets, suspended paper brush strokes which are themselves symbols of travel and memory. These rich and complex tones fill the frames with playful dynamism of colour, mirroring the distinct influences of two cultures that come together to create a narrative of identity.
