Between Folds / Natural History
Between Folds / Natural History uses every page of Bicknell’s Volume I and II of natural history. Using each page in its original order, the work forms a diptych that opens up this early guide to zoology completely. Creating a timeline of species, each illustration becomes a window into the nineteenth-century imagination, with animals wildly and creatively inaccurate. Inviting us to view – and decipher – over three-hundred animals alongside one another, Francisca visualises the Victorian curiosity of nature and science. Our eyes flicker between each incredible animal, drawn in by the avid explorer and their determination to document or imagine.
