Between Folds / Botanical (b/w)

Material: Wild Flowers by Anne Pratt. London (Hanover Square): The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1853
168 x 117 cm.

Francisca found the black and white imprint of Wild Flowers, having already worked with the coloured version. The attraction and nostalgia of black and white illustration is made all the more intimate through the original owner’s colouring in of the early pictures in the book. Beginning with every colour, slowly the inky washes become fewer and fewer, before fading away, with the owner’s concentration, entirely. Reminiscent of the shape of a plant, the stalk of the ‘f’ grows in monotone detail to bloom in colour at its head like a flower, telling the unique story of holder and book.
